6 March 2009 - New Silver Falcons Livery Now Available for Microsoft Flight Simulator
Thanks to the effort of Morné Pieters, there is now a high-quality Silver Falcons repaint for the IRIS PC-9 available for free download. Aircraft markings were meticulously digitised from photographs, bringing the Silver Falcons to the world of virtual aviation. The scheme is available for all the team pilots' aircraft, with accurate serial numbers, tail numbers and pilot information included.
The payware IRIS PC-9 was used instead of a PC-7, due to the high quality and accuarate flight dynamics of the model. It is compatible with FS2004 and FSX. A slight difference in the empennage will be visible to some aficionados. For more screenshots, visit our Media Page. For downloads, follow the links in the Avcom thread. Well done, Morné!
31 January 2009 - Air Force Day Parade & Sanlam Round-the-Island Yacht Race
On 30 January 2009, the annual Air Force Day Parade at AFB Swartkop, Pretoria was a minor letdown, since bad weather prevailed on the day. Despite a low cloud base, 30 aircraft got airborne and the Falcons did a flypast. The cloud base was unfortunately too low to do a display.
The next day, Team 70 flew their first display over the Vaal Dam at the Lake Deneys Yacht Club, host to the Sanlam Round-the-Island Yacht Race. Running commentary was provided by Brian Emmenis, experienced commentator from Capital Sounds and in his words, "This was the best received Falcons display I've ever seen!"
The Falcons will be featured in the television broadcasts on the follow days:
- Friday 6 March 2009 - 14:30 on Supersport 1
- Saturday 7 March 2009 - 23:00 on Supersport 2
- Sunday 8 March 2009 - 13:15 on Supersport 6
- Monday 9 March 2009 - 08:30 on Supersport 5
- Tuesday 10 March 2009 - 11:35 on Supersport 5

The first day was spent visiting the Central Flying School at AFB Langebaanweg where Dieter was afforded the opportunity to fly with the team. On the second day, Pasella accompanied the Falcons and their families on a crayfish-diving outing which ended in a memorable social gathering on the beach. 1 January 2009 – Silver Falcons prepare for a busy 2009 air show season
In a recent media release by Lt Gen Carlo Gagiano, Chief of the Air Force, he announced that there will be little to no air show participation by the SAAF over the next two years. Lt Gen Gagiano stated that the SAAF will use the time to prepare for security and emergency procedures for the locally hosted Confederations Cup in 2009 and the FIFA World Cup in 2010. The Silver Falcons, however, will continue to perform at air shows across the country and are facing an unusually busy season, due to the withdrawal of other SAAF performances.
The Silver Falcons will also be expanding their scope beyond the normal air show circuit to perform at other major public events whilst on tour. An example of this is their upcoming display at the Sanlam Round-the-Island Yacht Race, 31 January 2009 on the Vaal Dam.

8 December 2008 – Final Show for Capt Deetlefs
Capt Du Toit Deetlefs flew his last display for the Silver Falcons at a passing out parade at the Military Academy in Saldanha today. He flew his first display in March 2008 at AFB Langebaanweg - the same day that Maj Scott Ternent assumed leadership of the team. During his tour he flew 26 displays as Falcon 4, initially as soloist for the 4-ship and later as slot pilot for the 5-ship.
After matriculating from Hoërskool Linden in Johannesburg, he completed his B.Com degree at the University of Pretoria, before joining the SAAF in 1998. After getting his wings in 2000, Capt Deetlefs flew Cessna-185’s in the reconnaissance role before leaving the Air Force to fly Cessna Caravans on contract in Africa. He returned to the SAAF in 2004 to fly Caravans at 41 Squadron. In 2005, he completed Instructors’ Course and has been giving instruction at Central Flying School ever since. He has been transferred to 35 Squadron, AFB Ysterplaat, where he’ll fly the C-47 TP ‘Dakota’ during 2009. Capt Deetlefs is getting married to Belinda, a chemical engineer from Kenhardt, in February 2009.
Capt Deetlefs will be replaced by Lt Gerhard Lourens as the new Falcon 4. Lt Lourens has been travelling with the team as Ground Liaison Officer since August 2008.
