    ABOUT ALPHA

    Travel back to 1959, Knoxville, Tennessee. The United States Department of Defense recruited Alpha Industries to revamp its

    military jacket. As the jet age took flight to greater heights and ground troops encountered trickier terrain, the technological needs and real-life demands of our soldiers changed. Simply put, but not simply achieved, Alpha reengineered outdated designs. As better fabrics were developed and tested, Alpha made better jackets for the troops – better designed, better produced, and more reliable. Alpha garments were ranked as warmer, more comfortable, more durable and designed to meet any climatic challenge.

    Thus, for many decades the DOD awarded contracts to Alpha to manufacture outerwear to protect Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine Corps personnel. Since the mid-1960's Alpha has continuously manufactured the M-65 Field Jacket, and we've produced virtually every MA-1 Flight Jacket used by US Air Force, Army and Navy pilots. All told, Alpha Industries has produced over 40 million pieces of military outerwear to perform under the most severe conditions imaginable.

    THREE BARS MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE

    When Alpha Industries received a military contract and that contract was fulfilled, "surplus" materials were always left over. In order to use these materials and keep our factories operating, we continued to make jackets following the strict military specifications. These additional jackets were sold to surplus stores. But, for internal purposes we needed to develop a way to separate these jackets from the ones that were actually going to the military.

    On jackets shipping to the military the label contained a single black bar separating the identification of the type of jacket and its specifications. We developed a replacement label to be used for surplus jackets. The only difference between this and the actual military label was that we put three black bars instead of one. And, this label was the only difference between these surplus jackets and those that were actually to be worn by military servicemen. Other contractors also manufactured surplus coats, but they changed to lower grade materials using lighter fabric, thinner insulation, less durable zippers and fasteners. And they didn't change the internal labels; their garments still had the single black bar. Over time, customers at surplus stores began to notice that the jackets with the three bars were the best. And no wonder; after all, these were the exact same jackets that American pilots and ground crews were wearing at bases around the world. In fact, if you look closely at the Alpha logo, you'll see that we integrated these three bars into the mark that has come to symbolize our company and its products.

    GOING FASHION

    Years of manufacturing for the military and selling surplus paved the road for a smooth transition into the commercial fashion market. At the street level, Alpha was known as the producer of iconic military jackets worn by soldiers who faced extreme danger and harsh conditions.

    These products emerged into popular culture and the fashion world because Alpha's quality and manufacturing expertise had to be superior. And soon enough Alpha became a distinct fashion brand worldwide, with recognition in American and in major international markets in Europe and Asia.

    Alpha sets standard as a leader in cutting-edge apparel design. From flight decks to civilian sidewalks, Alpha stands on the frontlines of quality and fashion. Alpha is tried, tested and proven, and will remain part of the American Culture and is now available in South Africa!

    Brian Emmenis and the Capital Sounds team have been the voice of Air Shows in South Africa for the past 25 years, and for all of that time have actively supported and promoted the Silver Falcons and the South African Air Force.

    COMPANY PROFILE

    Capital Sounds was born out of an idea that Brian Emmenis had in early 1982. It goes back to just before Capital Radio 604 started broadcasting.During this time Brian was the commentator at the then Goldfields Raceway just outside of Welkom in the Free State. He met there with Barry Lambert, John Moody and Martin Rattle who were all the driving force behind new and very exciting radio station, Capital Radio 604.Barry Lambert, the head of Capital Radio's Sport Division encouraged Brian to come and join Capital Radio once they were on air !Capital Radio was launched at 06h00 on the 26 December,1979. The very first song played on this incredible radio station was "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Simon and Garfunkel.

    From then on Brian was hooked on Capital Radio 604 !
    Brian was used extensively as their sports commentator around the Free State .
    During this time he broadcast at many different sporting events including test rugby, international cricket matches, many golf and motorsport events, to name but a few.
    As a result of this Brian had to lug all of his broadcast equipment around the Free State each weekend.
    With Capital Radio doing extremely well and having their vehicles all beautifully branded Brian felt that it was now the right time for him to acquire a broadcast unit that could be used exclusively around the Free State.
    Along with a friend of his, Brian purchased an old Volkswagen combi. Working alongside a great team of volunteers night after night they successfully converted the sad ,old combi into an outside broadcast unit.
    The big day finally arrived when the Capital Radio bosses gave the authorisation for the broadcast unit to be branded in the colours of Capital Radio itself !
    This broadcast unit was not only used for sporting events but for many other types of events, ie Opening of Shopping Malls, School Carnivals, Drum Majorette Championships etc.
    Not long after his introduction of the broadcast unit, aptly nicknamed " OLD BLUE" Brian was approached by various businesses and event management teams to provide public address sound systems for an even larger variety of events.
    Brian was fortunate to have had the backing of Mr Terry Acres from Prosound, a sound supply company which is based in Johannesburg. This meant that the broadcast unit was soon equipped with the latest state of the art Electro-Voice equipment from America.
    During this period the presenters used during the broadcast and outside events were all permanent employees and radio presenters from Capital Radio including Kevin Savage, Phil Wright, Darren Scott and Dave Guselli. The public enjoyed meeting these great personalities at venues around the country.
    One of the big highlights for Brian was when the "Old Blue" broadcast unit was taken to Milpark Galleries in Johannesburg to be viewed by Capital Radio's senior management team. Much to the delight of Brian and his broadcast team the vehicle was well received by Capital Radio's management.
    As the demand for the supply of good public address sound systems increased Brian decided to purchase a Jurgens caravan which was then refurbished and renovated into a broadcast van. Again, his loyal team of freelance crew came on board to assist him night after night to complete the broadcast van in record time !
    At a later stage Capital Radio decided to give their very own magnificent Jurgens outside broadcast caravan to Brian and his team. This caravan was also converted into a state of the art broadcast unit.
    A local car dealer who sold Toyotas very kindly presented Brian with a brand new Toyota Hi-Ace which was also converted into an outside broadcast unit.
    At this stage Capital Sounds was a well known name and were now very involved with the presentation of airshows as well around South Africa.
    Brian now had a freelance crew of thirty five highly qualified members who travelled around the country with Capital Sounds whenever they were available.
    With the phasing out of the Toyota Hi-Ace, Imperial Bank kindly came on board and presented the team with a Mercedes Sprinter van which is still proudly being used as Capital Sounds's flagship broadcast unit a total of eleven years later !
    Today Capital Sounds has a fleet of seven outside broadcast units, a variety of support units, some generators and a wide range of broadcast equipment on hand.
    The largest outside broadcast event undertaken by the team was the Waterkloof Airshow which was presented by the South African Airforce and was attended by 350 000 spectators.
    The company has grown from strength to strength and now employs nine permanent staff members and a freelance crew of around thirty people.
    Many of the proud and loyal freelance crew have been with Capital Sounds for a period of twenty seven years.
